The Anchor of Macarius

✠ The Mountains of the Anchor The ridges north of Greece once carried the prayers of hermits. Stone sketes, cliff-cells, and monasteries rose from the mountainside, their chants forming a living bulwark against the unclean. It was here that Saint Macarius the Desert-Born faced a fallen principality in silent ordeal. Through a rite spoken only once, he forged the Anchor—iron geometry driven deep into the earth, its chain-nodes binding the spirit below. Generations tended the wards, until war shattered them. Trenches tore through chapels, artillery cracked the old seals, and gas mingled with infernal breath. Now the Anchor strains, and every warband converges with purpose: New Antioch seeks restoration; the Heretic Legions seek destruction; the Trench Pilgrims seek sanctification; the Sultanate seeks containment; the Court of the Seven-Headed Serpent seeks consumption; the Black Grail seeks rot. All others come for relics, power, or prophecy. The terrain is a maze of sacred ruin: trenches carved through hermitages, forests turned to stone, tar-filled craters, collapsed domes, and ravines that breathe like sleeping beasts.
